Illustrated with a full colour frontispiece by prominent British illustrator H. M. Brock.

This fantasy story was first published by Brock in 1862, though is very scarce in all nineteenth century editions.

Macdonald was best known for his fantasy novels such as 'Phantastes' and 'The Princess and the Goblin', which greatly influenced later writers such as C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. He also wrote poetry, literary criticism and sermons, and was a popular lecturer.

In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding. Bumping to spine head and tail, otherwise externally very smart. Inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Areas of significant spotting throughout. One page of publisher's catalogue hand coloured by a prior owner.
