Description

Illustrated, Leather Binding

In an Oxford binding. Both works are undated and are therefore dated from Copac. With the bookplate of Arthur William Ashton Peel to the front pastedown. Gift inscription addressed to Peel to the recto of front endpaper from A M Goodhart, probably Arthur Murray Goodhart the British composer. Arthur William Ashton Peel was the 2nd Earl Peel and Viscount Clanfield. His great grandfather was the Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel. Master Humphrey's Clock is illustrated with nineteen illustrations by Cattermole and Phiz, with Edwin Drood featuring twelve illustrations by Luke Fildes. Master Humphrey's Clock was a weekly periodical based around a frame story in which Master Humphrey tells the reader about himself and his small circle of friends. The Mystery of Edwin Drood is Dickens' final novel and was unfinished at his time of death. The novel focuses on Drood's uncle who is in love with his pupil. It follows Drood's mysterious disappearance. Charles Dickens was an English writer and social critic. He is often regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era.
