Volume six details the reign of James IV to Charles I. Volume seven details the social progress from the Reformation to the Restoration and the military history of the Revolution. Volume eight details the Treaty of Union to the Insurrection of 1745-1746, and the social and intellectual progress of the country. With a one hundred page index volume. Written by John Hill Burton, a Scottish advocate, historian and economist who began his career with this work in 1853. Previously held in Edinburgh University Library. Condition

In the original red cloth binding. Externally, smart with light rubbing and minor bumping to the extremities. Light fading to the spines with the odd small mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd pencil annotation and the odd spot to the foredge. Ink stamps to the title pages. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper with Edinburgh University Library bookplate to the front pastedown.
