James Valentine of Valentine's of Dundee was an important Scottish photographer who published topographical views of the county. He became an international name after producing picture postcards.

Prints made using albumen paper were popularly used for printing between 1850 and 1900. The paper was made by coating thing paper with a layer of egg whites containing salt and a silver nitrate solution, then being printed using daylight underneath a negative. The prints were often toned with a solution to reduce the risk of fading, which gives the sepia-tone which with we associate old photographs. This method of photography was founded by Louis Desire Blanquart-Evrad, who published his method in 1847.
