    Description

    Leather Binding, Original Binding, Signed Binding, Very Scarce, With Letter

    A fascinating and unique diary manuscript titled 'Musical Memories' by the unnamed author. 

    Narrating his first musical memories during his childhood in 1866, through the next twenty years of this life, the unnamed author chronicles his amateur career as a musician and composer.

    From the manuscript, it is clear that the author grew up in Weymouth, served in the 29th Regiment at Jersey in 1876, and composed several operettas from the mid 1870s to the late 1880s. He also performed and conducted performances for the Castle Cary Choral Society in Cadbury.  

    The author also details noted nineteenth-century musicians he has been acquainted with, including Alfred Caldicott and Thomas German Reed. 

    A fascinating picture of the nineteenth-century music scene in the South of England. 

    This copy was bound and produced by A. Webster and Larkin Stationers in Piccadilly, and it still retains its original functioning clasp, lock, and key.

    One hundred and eighty-six pages have been used in this diary, leaving approximately fifty pages blank.

    Condition

    In full leather binding, with the original functioning clasp, lock, and key. Including the binder's sticker to the front pastedown. Externally, generally sound, with some shelf wear to the boards and rubbing to the spine, joints, and extremities. Joints are slightly tender. Internally, hinges have been reinforced. The odd spot and handling mark to the pages, which are otherwise generally bright and clean.
