Description

Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

Fifth Edition.

In the publisher's original cloth binding, with lovely illustration on boards and spine.

Illustrated with almost three-hundred illustrated plate engravings by Thomas Bewick (1753-1828), an English wood-engraver and natural history author.

This is an interesting work of literary criticism, dedicated to the 'Members of the Ladies' Committee of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals'. This text describes the habits, instinct, and peculiarities of various different animal species in a 'descriptive and anecdotical form', and tackles various different subjects within natural history.

Contents include 'The Dog as an Actor', 'Aeronautic Spiders', 'Affection and Fidelity of the Buzzard', 'Can All Animals Talk?', and 'Dexterity of a Goat'.

Written by a range of contributors, including Thomas Bewick, James Reiveley, William Harvey, and others.

With an ink inscription to front paste down belonging to Charles Cook.
