What Our Customers Say...

Description

Colour Plates, Illustrated, Leather Binding

The complete four volume alphabetically organised set of botanist and horticulturalist George Nicholson's most important work, illustrated throughout and uniformly bound in smart half morocco bindings.

Consisting of volume I, A-E, volume II, F-O, volume III, P-S, volume IV, T-Z and supplement, and volume V, the Century Supplement volume.

A fascinating dictionary of plants, designed to be read by gardeners and botanists alike, and with a bright colour frontispiece to each volume, and numerous further in-text illustrations throughout.

This work is commonly praised as being the best and most complete work on gardening and garden plants published in the nineteenth century, remaining a standard work on the subject even to this day. Indeed, the Royal Horticultural Society's current 'Dictionary of Gardening' has Nicholson's 'Illustrated Dictionary' as its basis, even retaining its predecessor's layout.

With the former owner's inscription of Mary Gertrude Foster, 1906, to a front endpaper of each volume.
