Translated from the original French.

Illustrated with a frontispiece and forty-nine plates by French illustrator Gustave Dore, this is a lovely collection of the works of Rabelais, who was primarily known as a writer of satire, of the grotesque, and of bawdy jokes and songs.

In a signed full morocco Arts and Crafts style binding by Douglas Cockerell, signed 'WHS', during his directorship of the bindery of W.H. Smith & Son, between 1905 and 1914.

With the bookplate of Captain Gardiner to the front pastedown.

A charming work bound by one of the foremost binders of the twentieth century, recognised for his distinctive Arts and Crafts style bindings.

Condition

In a full morocco signed binding. A touch of discolouration to back strip, with light rubbing to spine head and tail. Boards bright, with three small worm holes to the tail of the front board, not penetrating to pastedowns. Armorial bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
