Eleven novels of George Eliot in ten volumes, the illustrated cheap editions of her works as well as some Cabinet editions, dated from Jisc c1880-90. From the library at Julian Park, Hertfordshire, belonging to Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie. Audrey was the youngest daughter of an Anglo-American lumber and steel millionaire, sister to Edward James, a key figure in the Surrealist movement, and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII.
The present collection is comprised of the following titles:
Adam Bebe, the new edition with six illustrations;
The Mill on the Floss, the stereotyped edition, with six illustrations;
Silas Marner and Scenes of Clerical Life in one volume, both the stereotyped edition, with seven illustrations;
Felix Holt, the stereotyped edition, with six illustrations;
Romola, the stereotyped edition, with the illustrated title page only, as called for;
Middlemarch, the new edition complete in one volume dated 1882, with only the illustrated title page as called for;
Daniel Deronda, the new edition dated 1881, with an illustrated title page only as called for;
The Spanish Gypsy, the Cabinet edition, with no illustrations;
The Legend of Jubal and other poems, the Cabinet edition with no illustrations;
Impressions of Theophrastus Such, the Cabinet edition.
George Eliot, pen name for Mary Ann Evans, was an English novelist and poet among other things. She wrote under pen name to escape the stereotype of women only writing romances, and became one of the leading authors during the Victorian era. Her writing is appreciated for her realism, countryside life depictions, and psychological insights.
Illustrated. Collated with twenty-five illustrations and an illustrated title page to each volume except to those published in the Cabinet edition. Collated, complete.
She was an English socialite known for her beauty and for charming various wealthy men, she was included in The Book of Beauty by Cecil Beaton. A patron of the arts, she assisted Viscount Carlow financially in the publication of limited editions of numerous works by leading literary figures such as T E Lawrence, James Joyce, Wyndham Lewis, and others. A hedonistic pursuer, she was recognised as one of the 'Bright Young Things'.
Condition
In a half morocco binding over marbled boards, edges, and endpapers. Externally rather worn with some shelf wear and rubbing to the spine and boards, minor scuffing. Internally, the front hinges are only slightly strained to the first and third volume, holding firm. The hinges are also strained to vol. X, the upper joints also starting. The binding is generally firm to all volumes. The pages are bright and clean. Illustrated with twenty five full page plates as well as illustrated title pages. Collated, complete.
