A seven volume edition of the works of one of the leading novelists of the Victorian era, George Eliot. Containing her eight published works of fiction bound in seven volumes.
With most of her novels set in provincial England, Eliot's works are known for their realism, psychological insight, sense of place and detailed depiction of the countryside.
Consisting of all seven of her novels: 'Adam Bede', 'The Mill on the Floss', 'Silas Marner', 'Felix Holt', 'Romola', 'Daniel Deronda' and 'Middlemarch', and her first published work of fiction, 'Scenes of a Clerical Life', a collection of three short stories.
With one novel per volume with the exception of 'Silas Marner' and 'Scenes of a Clerical Life', which are bound together.
With the armorial bookplate of Olof Axel Ohlsson to each front pastedown.
In lovely half calf signed bindings by Morrell, with gilt detailing to spines.
Condition
In half calf signed bindings by Morrell, with cloth covered boards. Externally, smart, with back strips a touch rubbed and lightly age toned, and with boards bright. Spotting to text block fore edges. Front joint of 'Silas', and head of front joint of 'Middlemarch', starting, but firmly held. Light rubbing to joints. Armorial bookplates to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright, with spotting and instances of foxing throughout, most concentrated to first and last few leaves.
