The Amie's Standard Art Edition of this wonderful collection of fables from French fabulist, Jean de La Fontaine.
These fables, translated by Walter Thornbury, provided a model for subsequent fabulists across Europe. Jean de La Fontaine's reputation in France has ceased to fade since the publication of his works, and he was one of the quartet of the Rue du Vieux Colombier, famous in French literary history.
Profusely illustrated throughout with by Gustave Dore, a French artist who is best known for his bountiful output of wood-engravings illustrating classic literature.
In the publisher's original decorative cloth with gilt detailing. In need of a sympathetic rebind, however boards are smart and internals are bright and clean.
Condition
In the original decorative cloth binding. Externally, in need of a sympathetic rebind. Front hinge failed and boards are only just being held by cords to the rear hinge. May detach with further handling. Cloth itself is smart and bright, with slight rubbing to the extremities and a few marks to the boards. Internally, firmly bound with generally bright and clean pages. Endpapers have scattered spotting, with a contemporary ink illustration and inscription to the verso of the front free endpaper. Contemporary ink inscription to the title page.
