What Our Customers Say...

Description

Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, Scarce

A fascinating late Victorian era album of forty-eight mounted albumen prints of the ancient city of Pompeii, in the original cloth binding.

With the first plate referring to the destruction of the city on November 23, 79 A.D., and its discovery in 1748, what follows is a further forty-seven plates of various parts of the city.

The majority of plates are captioned in French with an account of the year of discovery of the various sites, from 1764 to 1869. Photographs also feature the stone casts of the original Pompeiians, with others including depictions contemporary tourists visiting the site.

A wonderful insight into Pompeii as it was in the late nineteenth century.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding. Significant bumping to back strip head and tail and board perimeters, resulting in losses to the cloth and fraying. Discolouration to back strip, with significant ink marks to rear board. Front and rear hinges strained, with boards tender. Internally, firmly bound. Plates age toned, with scattered light spotting and handling marks.
