Colour Plates, Illustrated, Leather Binding

The first section of this work examines the history of the horse (with an extensive exploration and comparison of horse breeds), the structure and anatomy of the horse, the practice of veterinary medicine, and a history of horse racing. This copy also contains information regarding the management of other farm animals, such as cattle, sheep, pigs, by J. I. Lupton. In a half polished calf binding with attractive marbled paper boards, endpapers and textblock. Containing copious illustrations throughout depicting attractive sporting scenes, the anatomy of the horse, and pictorial representations of the process of shoeing the animal, engraved from original drawings by Benjamin Herring. Collated, incomplete with: Twelve plates to the main text (three of which are coloured), lacking plates of 'The Roadster (Surefoot)', 'The Trotting Cob (Silvertail) and 'Portrait of Thormanby (Racer)'. With three additional plates: 'The Stable and Stable Fittings' facing page 124, a coloured plate of 'Sir Bevys' facing page 511, and a coloured plate of 'Isonomy' facing page 516. Twenty coloured plates to the 'Atlas of Anatomical Plates', four of which are coloured. Collated complete but bound out of order. Five coloured plates to the 'Essay on Diseases of Cattle, Sheep, and Pigs', collated complete. This copy is undated, dated using Copac.

Condition

In a half crushed morocco binding with cloth covered boards. Externally very smart, with minor shelfwear to extremities and the odd light mark to boards. Slight rubbing to head and tail of spines and joints. Hinges reinforced. Two very small closed tears to fore edge of rear free-endpaper. Prior owner's faint pencil inscription to verso of front free-endpaper. Internally firmly bound. Pages very slightly age toned to extremities, but very bright and clean throughout. Faint tidemark to lower fore edge of anatomical plate XII, not affecting image.
