A wonderfully illustrated collection of works from Oliver Goldsmith. Containing an introduction, notes, and a ‘Life of Oliver Goldsmith’ from John Francis Waller. This charming work contains Goldsmith’s best known novel ‘The Vicar of Wakefield’ (1766), as well as some selected poems and comedies. Goldsmith (1728 – 1774) was an Anglo-Irish novelist, playwright, dramatist and poet. ‘The Vicar of Wakefield’ was one of the most popular and widely read novels of the Victorian era. Goldsmith is also know for his pastoral poem The Deserted Village (1770), and his plays The Good-Natur'd Man (1768) and She Stoops to Conquer (1771, first performed in 1773). In a half calf binding. Signed and dated in ink by previous owner to verso of front endpaper. Undated, dated 1877 using Jisc from copy held at the British Library.
Condition
In half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Some light marks to the boards and, particularly the rear board. Also ink stain (?) to the rear board. Slight rubbing to the extremities, particularly the spine. Marbled paper to pastedowns and endpapers. Signed and dated in ink by previous owner to verso of front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with only a few spots to end pages.
