Description

An Important Work, Original Binding

First published in 1837, this work from Scottish essayist, philosopher and historian Thomas Carlyle charts the course of the French Revolution from 1789 to 1795. Immediately establishing Carlyle as an important nineteenth century intellectual, it served as a major influence on many of his contemporaries, particularly as a source of inspiration for Charles Dickens' 'A Tale of Two Cities'.

A significant undertaking drawing from a vast array of sources, Carlyle's history is considered to be an authoritative account of the early course of the Revolution. These volumes are also noteworthy for having been written in an unusual tone in comparison to Carlyle's contemporary historical authors, making extensive use of personification and metaphor. Carlyle writes in the present-tense first-person plural, placing himself and the reader together as they observe such dramatic events as the fall of the Bastille or execution of the French king.

To the verso of a front free endpaper appears an 1885 dedication of these volumes to 'H. Crum-Ewing', referring to Scottish Liberal politician and MP Humphrey Ewing Crum-Ewing.

While the title page of this work is undated, the pagination of these volumes correspond to those published in 1869, as available on LibraryHub.
