A pictorial museum including plates illustrating regal, ecclesiastical, municipal, baronial, and popular antiquities. Complete in two volumes. Dated from Jisc c1860.
Illustrated with full page illuminated engravings of old England, thirteen to volume I, and twelve to volume II, as well as numerous engravings in black and white in text. Collated, complete, with the illuminated plates of 'White Chapel' erroneously listed to face p.109 instead of 169 of vol. II. No half titles.
Charles Knight was an English publisher, editor, and author, known for his contributions to such works as The Penny Magazine, The English Encyclopaedia, and others.
Condition
In half morocco binding over cloth covered boards, gilt to the edges. Externally generally sound with shelf wear and rubbing to the spine and extremities, sunning to the spine. General light soiling to the boards and minor marking. Previous ownership stamp tot he front free endpaper of each volume. Internally, firmly bound. Light spotting to the odd leaf, otherwise the pages are generally very clean throughout. Illustrated with full page illuminated engravings of old England, thirteen to volume I, and twelve to volume II, as well as numerous engravings in black and white in text. Collated, complete.
