Description

Illustrated, Leather Binding, Rebound, Scarce

Two series bound together in one volume, with 38 plates to the first series, and 39 to the second. There is a title page and frontispiece to the front of the first series. The second series does not have a general title page, instead starting with a heading title.

A collection of minutely detailed steel engraved plates depicting the views of the Rhine, accompanied by descriptive passages by Henry Gray Fearnside. The illustrator responsible for the plates, William Tombleson, was celebrated in his day as a fine topographical and architectural artist, and originally produced these engravings in the 1830s.

While most earlier editions attribute this work to William Gray Fearnside, in this one authorship is attributed to Henry Gray Fearnside.

While this edition does not provide a publication date, it can be identified as c. 1850 via WorldCat.

Former owner's inscription to the front pastedown, with the name 'D. L. Cumming'.

Condition

In a quarter morocco binding with cloth covered boards. Fading to the front and rear boards, with some wear to extremities. Losses to the morocco section, with starting to the front and rear joint. Former owner's inscription to the front pastedown. Internally, generally firmly bound though slightly strained at the frontispiece. Pages are generally bright, though some marks are present.
