Description

First Edition, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Very Scarce

The first and only edition of this work. A very scarce work, only three held institutionally at the National Library of France, Harvard Law School Library, and Yale University. Illustrated with a frontispiece, and one plate. With the half-title. Collated, complete. Undated. In the armorial binding of Louis Henri Joseph de Bourbon-Conde, with the armorial device to the boards and spine. Louis was the Prince of Conde from 1818 to 1830. He survived the purge of House of Bourbon during the French Revolution by escaping to England with his father, returning to France in 1814, the same year that this book was published. He died under mysterious circumstances in August 1830, just after the July Revolution. In the original French. 'La Verite Sur l'Administration de la Justice' is an extensive guide to law and administration in France in the early nineteenth century. This was a turbulent time in French history, particularly in Paris, as this was only twenty years after the French Revolution, and during the swapping between the monarchy and empire seen in the first half of the nineteenth century. This work was dedicated to Louis XVIII, who was King for less than a year following the first defeat of Napoleon, when he was exiled to Elba. Written by Jean-Baptiste Selves, a lawyer in the Toulouse Parliament. He was the president of the criminal court of Lot, and was a special justice of Paris. He was on the trial of Jean Victor Marie Moreau, and opposed his death.

Condition

In a full marbled calf armorial binding. Externally, smart. Very light rubbing to the spine. A little bumping to the extremities. Prior seller's label to the rear pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned with some spots.
