c1790 The Siege of Troy Containing I. An Account of the Parentage, Birth and Glorious Actions of Hercules of Greece II. How Hercules Strangled two Serpents in his Cradle, that had killed his brother. III. How Hercules conquered two giants, and rescued the king of Troy's daughter, by killing a sea monster. IV. The Greeks Declare War against the Trojans, and besiege the city of Troy, which lasted ten years. V. The Destruction of Troy by the strategem of a wooden horse. VI. Athenor escapes from the vengeance of the Greeks, and settles in Italy VII. Brutus, son of Athenor, accompanied by an army, land in Englandm, and in a bloody battle, Albion, the king, is slain and Gog and Magog taken prisoners. VIII. Brutus, after conquering Albion, causes London to be built, &c. &c.

Description

Illustrated, Leather Binding, Very Scarce

With a frontispiece depicting Ulysses and his soldiers, after descending from the Wooden Horse and a woodcut vignette to page 60. Collated, using catchwords and printer's devices, complete. A very scarce work, which looks at the Ancient Greek mythology of the Trojan War. No record of this work on Copac or at the ESTC. The chapbook was issued as an affordable printed book, which explains the paper quality and printing quality of this work. To pages 16-17 there is some bleed-through from the reverse of leaf but the text is still readable. Originally priced as a six-pence as noted to the title page. This work is undated and has been dated using records on the ESTC of other similar historical works published by Sabine and Son of No. 81 Shoe Lane.

Condition

In a half calf binding. Rebacked with the original boards preserved. Externally, generally smart. Patches of rubbing to the boards and to the extremities. Bibliographical note to the front pastedown of this work from a catalogue. Internally, firmly bound. Small amount of loss to the head of page 64 not affecting the text. Fading to the text and some bleed-through to page 15 due to paper and printing quality. Pages are generally bright with scattered spotting to the first and last few pages and the odd spot throughout.
