Early Edition, Signed, Very Scarce

The second edition, dated from the dedication 'To the Ladies' 1769. Maclean, 'V. Household and Cookery Books', p. 17 notes that a second edition is described with a preface dated 1762, however this second edition is stated to the title page and does not appear to have a preface. The ESTC second edition copy was dated c1767.

Signed by the author to the verso of the title page as called for, to prevent the publication of unauthorised copies, with the printer's signature imprinted below. 

A rarely found copy of this cookery book by Catharine Brooks, which contains many directives and hints to numeorus techniques to be used in the kitchen: to roast beef, lamb, veal, mutton, &c; boiling hams, tongues, poultry; making sauces, dressing greens; hashing meats; stewing veal, fish; baking, making pies of fish, meat, fruits, and tarts; and much more.

Condition

In a half morocco binding over paper covered boards. Externally sound with some shelf wear and rubbing to the spine and extremities, with a minor loss to the tail of the spine. The spine label has lost its text. With new endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are fairly chipped, resulting in some loss to the title page and the last leaf of advertisement, affecting the text to its recto. With a faint minor scattered spotting to the leaves throughout, particularly to the first and last few. Illustrated with a grangerised frontispiece to face p. 6. Lacking the original plate noted on ESTC.
