What Our Customers Say...
Description
Very Scarce
A collection of Latin sermons written by Gabriel Barletta.
Very scarce work.
Published in two volumes, this is volume II only, lacking publishing details.
Gabriel Barletta was a preacher active in the Neapolitan territory at Barletta during the late fifteenth century. Little is known about his life, with speculation suggesting he was a pupil of St. Antoninus and likely a Dominican. He was widely known for his skills as an orator, presenting sermons on the virtues and vices of life, receiving much praise from his contemporaries.
Widely celebrated for his preaching, Barletta often employed linguistic liberties not seen before, including the incorporation of jokes, common dialect and theatrics.
First appearing in print in 1497, Barletta's sermons held their popularity long after Barletta's death, being reprinted frequently ever since. His sermons provide us with an interesting insight into fifteenth-century society, particularly in Northern Italy.
Dated using Jisc, from copies of Barletta's sermons of the same nature.
