The fifth son of Robert Thorburn, portrait miniaturist to Queen Victoria, Archibald Thorburn began his artistic career at an early age. His first major commision was in 1887 for Lord Lilford's 'Coloured Figures of the Birds of the British Isles', for which he painted some 268 watercolours. Widely praised for his work, Thorburn steadily began to illustrate numerous sporting and natural history books, including his own. Complete in four volumes. A mixed edition set, containing the following: Volume I: A New Edition, Second Impression copy published in 1931 Volume II: A New Edition copy published in 1925. Volume III: A New Edition copy published in 1926. Volume IV: A New Edition copy published in 1926. In a lovely half crushed morocco binding with cloth boards and attractive marbled endpapers. With one hundred and ninety-two beautiful coloured plates, accompanied with a detailed physical description of each bird. Among the many birds included in this set are favourites such as the mallard, albatross, kingfisher, barn-owl, and magpie

Condition

In a half crushed morocco binding with cloth boards. Externally lovely. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned to extremities but very bright and clean. The odd spot to the occasional page, heavier to first and last few pages.
