Colour Plates, First Edition, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

This work was written and illustrated by the renowned British artist Dion Clayton Calthrop. Whilst Calthrop was primarily known for his illustrations and as an author of humorous stories, he also published several books on various subjects, such as this fascinating work on costume history. This work was first published in 1906 in four volumes, with this edition being the first in one volume. With an extensive publisher's catalogue to the rear of the work. In the publisher's original pictorial cloth binding, with charming art nouveau designs to the front board and spine. Collated complete with seventy colour plates, numerous in-text line drawings, 'a series of thirty-two half-tone reproductions of Engravings by Hollar' and ' a series of sixty half-tone reproductions of wash drawings by the Dightons-Father and Son- and by the author'.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding with pictorial design to front board and spine. Externally generally smart, with slight bumping to extremities. Heavy bumping to head and tail of spine, resulting in large split and section of cloth lifting to head of spine. Slight fading to spine, as expected with this colour binding, and the odd small mark to rear board. Internally firmly bound. Pages slightly age toned to extremities but very bright and clean throughout.
