First Edition, Folding Plates, Illustrated, Leather Binding, Very Scarce
A very scarce work. Illustrated with fifteen plates, one of which is folding. Collated, complete. The first edition of this work, being the first collected edition of these articles, each written by Samuel Pierpont Langley. 'Story of Experiments in Mechanical Flight', from the 1897 Smithsonian Report. 'The Langley Aerodrome', from the 1900 Smithsonian Report. 'The Greatest Flying Creature', from the 1901 Smithsonian Report. 'Experiments with the Langley Aerodrome', from the 1904 Smithsonian Report. These articles offer a good insight into Samuel Pierpont Langley's work developing and engineering an aeroplane. The articles were published from 1897 to 1904, years during which Langley was working hard with the Smithsonian Langley was the third Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution in 1887, and was later the founder of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. In 1898, he received a War Department, grant, and a grant from the Smithsonian, to develop a piloted airplane, which he named an aerodrome. Condition
In a half morocco binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Discolouration to the boards. A little rubbing to the spine. Prior owner's ink inscription to the recto to the front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with only a couple of light spots.
