The first edition of this work. An uncommon work. A presentation copy from the director of the Vacuum Brake Company, Alfred Louis Sacre. A fascinating and detailed engineering work, describing the vacuum brake, a braking system on trains, that was introduced in the mid 1860s. Illustrated with ten plates, three of which are double paged. Prior owner's ink inscription to the head of the contents page, 'R. P. Wiltshire .... With Compliments Alfred L. Sacre'. Alfred Sacre was an engineer, training under Archibald Sturrock, and later working on the full charge of the Peterborough district, and the manager of the Avonside Engine Works in Bristol. In 1882 he became the manager and managing director of the Vacuum Brake Co. Undated, dated from Jisc from a copy held at the Institution of Mechanical Engineers Library.

Condition

In a half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing has caused loss of leather to the spine and to the extremities. Cracks to the head and tail of the joints. Minor marks to the boards. Front hinge is starting but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with some spots and some marks. Stamp to the head of the title page, contents page, pages 2 and 3, and to the margins of the plates.. Small ink mark to the tail of the title page. Prior owner's ink inscription to the head of the contents page.
