What Our Customers Say...

Description

Colour Plates, First Edition, Illustrated, Pleasing Copy, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper

Although born (and trained as an architect) in England, Calvert Vaux traveled to America in 1850 to collaborate with Andrew Jackson Downing on Picturesque estate landscape projects, before working with numerous landscape architects, architects, and designers in the United States during his extensive forty five year career. An avid proponent of naturalistic and rustic designs, Vaux revolted against the urbanization of the nineteenth century, and introduced new ideas about the significance of public parks in America; integrating architecture into its natural surroundings. Vaux's best-known partnership was with Frederick Law Olmsted on the winning 'Greensward Plan', which would later become New York City's Central Park. This text is the first comprehensive narrative of Calvert Vaux's works; providing a fascinating account and study of his designs by the architectural historian, writer and editor William Alex. The work also features a fascinating introduction by Professor George B. Tatum. This copy is profusely illustrated with photographs, plans and drawings, some of which are in colour. Complete with the original unclipped dustwrapper.
