Description
Illustrated
The landscape gardens were designed by eminent landscaper, Capability Brown. This work discusses the grounds in great detail, with plans and illustrations of all the bridges, follies, grottos and temples. An important work, which was first published under a slightly different title of 'Stowe: A Description of the Magnificent House and Gardens of the Right Honourable Richard Grenville Temple'.
This guide was important in spreading the influence of Stowe as a modl for the English landscape garden. It was Seeley's guide books on Stowe that influenced the planning of Catherine the Great's Park at Tsarskoe Selo, St Petersburg. Thomas Jefferson owned at least two of Seeley's guidebooks and visited the gardens with John Adams.
These guidebooks went through several editions which traces the development of the site over many years.
