Iain Stevenson was emeritus professor of publishing at University College London. Stevenson started his career was in commercial publishing, working for Longman, Macmillan, Wiley, and the Stationery Office. He later founded the environmental publishers, Belhaven Press.
In this interesting work, Stevenson looks at British publishing in the twentieth century, as it developed from a small elite trade into a world-class business. He studies key figures such as William Heinemann, Allen Lane, Paul Hamlyn and Robert Maxwell. Illustrated with numerous black-and-white photographs.
From the library of W. A. Foyle at Beeleigh Abbey, with his morocco bookplate to the front paste down. William Foyle was the co-founder of Foyles bookshop, founding the leading bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex, which became home to his library, one the largest private libraries in England.

In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is in lovely condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Dust wrapper is in excellent condition except for a little creasing to the front flyleaf.
