This is a political study of the Shi'i movement and how it has affected Iranian culture following the Islamic revolution of 1979. This text works chronologically from 1968 to the present day, with chapter headings such as 'The Shi'is in the Eastern Province and Saudi Rule', 'The Accord (1993)', and 'Accommodation and Evolving Attitudes (1993-Present)'. 

The author has also included an afterword which gives his thoughts on the accession of King Abdullah to the throne in August of 2005.

Fouad Ibrahim is a professor emeritus at the Institute of Geography at the University of Bayreuth in Germany. He is responsible for introducing the term 'desertification' from French & English African geography into German-language geography. Most of his works focus upon geographical subjects, particularly in the region of Darfur.
