The five volume first and only edition of this standard reference work.

Each volume retains the beautifully illustrated price unclipped dust wrapper, with 'Invented and Apocryphal Narratives of Travel' volume retaining the original wraparound band, and the 'Continental Exploration' volume preserved in the original shrink wrap.

The five volumes, which together include over 5157 articles in 4232 pages, constitute some 4.2 million words.

The first volume covers the period to 1800.

The second volume continues the history of exploration, travel and colonization through the following fifty years, from 1800-1850.

The third volume covers the oceans, islands and polar regions for the final period of 1850 to 1940.

The fourth volume deals with continental and land exploration for the same period.

The fifth and final volume deals with imaginary voyages and invented worlds.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth bindings, and unclipped dust wrappers. The final volume retains the original wraparound band. The 'Continental Exploration' volume is preserved in the original shrink wrap, and is as new. Externally, fine. Dust wrappers in exceptional condition. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
