The first edition of this work, being the book of the documenta X, the tenth edition of a quinquennial contemporary art exhibition held between June and September 1997 in Germany. The artistic director was Catherine David, the first woman to be appointed as artistic director of documenta.
This volume seeks to indicate a political context for the interpretations at the end of the twentieth century through a series of images and documents from the immediate post-war period to the contemporary times (1945-1997).
Looking at the political endeavour in relation to artistic production, which sparks a contemporary debate over the evolution of society and singles out complex cultural responses to the unifying process of global modernity.

In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally lovely with minor shelf wear only and minor denting to the rear board. The dust wrapper is excellent with only minor shelf wear with a minor rubbing to the rear wrap; unclipped. Internally, firmly bound. the pages are bright and clean. Richly illustrated in text throughout both in colour and in black and white.
