Eight volumes. Written by William Shakespeare, an English playwright, poet and actor, regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. In the First Folio, the plays of William Shakespeare were grouped into three categories: comedies, histories, and tragedies; and modern scholars recognize a fourth category, romance, to describe the specific types of comedy that appear in Shakespeare's later works. Comedies in two volumes, 1995-1996. Volume one contains: The Comedy of Errors; The Taming of the Shrew; The Two Gentlemen of Verona; Love's Labour's Lost; Romeo and Juliet; and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Volume two contains: The Merchant of Venice; The Merry Wives of Windsor; Much Ado About Nothing; As You Like It; Twelfth Night; All's Well That Ends Well; and Measure for Measure. Romances, 1996. The late romances, often simply called the romances, are a grouping of William Shakespeare's last plays, this collection comprises Pericles; Cymbeline; The Winter's Tale; and The Tempest.
