Description
Original Binding, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper
Eight volumes. Written by William Shakespeare, an English playwright, poet and actor, regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. In the First Folio, the plays of William Shakespeare were grouped into three categories: comedies, histories, and tragedies; and modern scholars recognize a fourth category, romance, to describe the specific types of comedy that appear in Shakespeare's later works. This collection includes: The Sonnets and Narrative Poems, 1992. Scholars are not certain when each of the 154 sonnets was composed, but evidence suggests that Shakespeare wrote sonnets throughout his career for a private readership. Tragedies in two volumes, 1992-1993. Volume one contains: Hamlet; Othello; King Lear; and Macbeth. Volume two contains: Titus Andronicus; Troilus and Cressida; Julius Caesar; Antony and Cleopatra; Timon of Athens; and Coriolanus. Histories in two volumes, 1994. Volume one contains: Henry VI, Part 1; Henry VI, Part 2; Henry VI, Part 3; Richard III; and King John. Volume two contains: Richard II; Henry IV Part 1; Henry IV Part 2; Henry V; and Henry VIII. Comedies in two volumes, 1995-1996. Volume one contains: The Comedy of Errors; The Taming of the Shrew; The Two Gentlemen of Verona; Love's Labour's Lost; Romeo and Juliet; and A Midsummer Night's Dream. Volume two contains: The Merchant of Venice; The Merry Wives of Windsor; Much Ado About Nothing; As You Like It; Twelfth Night; All's Well That Ends Well; and Measure for Measure. Romances, 1996. The late romances, often simply called the romances, are a grouping of William Shakespeare's last plays, this collection comprises Pericles; Cymbeline; The Winter's Tale; and The Tempest.
