The first edition thus, with many embellishments in colour throughout by Maurice Sendak. Originally published in 1947 by Williams and Norgate. 

An incredibly charming collection of  over one hundred and seventy traditional rhymes for children collected and edited by Iona and Peter Opie. 

With an introduction and notes by Iona Opie and numerous boisterous illustrations by Maurice Sendak. In the unclipped dust wrapper.

Condition

In the original publisher's paper covered boards. Externally lovely with only minor shelf wear. The dust wrapper is unclipped and excellent with minor shelf wear only and some minor dotted marks to the front wrap and spine. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean. Illustrated in text throughout with colourful embellishments by Maurice Sendak.
