Description

Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding

This is the first edition, of a print run of 1750 copies of which 600 were for sale. This copy was gifted to Patricia Milne-Henderson, the notable Art Historian. Milne-Henderson was married to art historian and curator Michael Jaffe. This copy was given to Milne-Henderson with an invite to the private views of an exhibition of Hughes-Stanton's work to coincide with this publication. The leaflet is loosely inserted, as is a compliments slip with the book. Inserted in a brown envelope is a letter from the author of this work and daughter of the artist, Penelope Hughes-Stanton. The letter is addressed to Patricia Milne-Henderson at her Clifton Maybank address. The letter apologised to Milne-Henderson for not being able to include the introduction she had written for this publication. Milne-Henderson was a biographer of Hughes-Stanton and an authority on the subject. The introduction written by Hughes-Stanton is also inserted in the envelope. This biography is written about Blair Hughes-Stanton, a founding member of the English Wood Engraving Society and co-director of the Gregynog Press. With many examples of Hughes-Stanton's striking wood engravings throughout. He was a major figure in the English wood-engraving revival in the twentieth century. This work looks at his life in the context of his art, with great detail of his style and how it adapted and progressed over the years. A fine copy of this work, with fascinating association.
