Instead, a global telecommunications system provides friendship and support through economic democratic corporations. 

The main character's preconceptions start to change as she becomes aware of her company making deals with offshore data-pirates, as well as countries like Grenada and Singapore who still live with a work ethic, natural food, personal wealth, and the petrol engine. 

Bruce Sterling is an American science fiction writer. He is particularly linked to the cyberpunk genre, and is the co-editor of the Mirrorshades anthology.
