Description
First Edition, Folding Maps, Illustrated, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper
The first English language edition of this work, first published in German in 1976, in the publisher's original unclipped dust wrapper.
Illustrated with a number of plates and a folding map frontispiece, this is a thrilling account of the last large-scale expedition to be undertaken by the Dutch East India Company, led by Captain Willem de Vlamingh.
Utilising a number of contemporary sources, with special reference to cartography, this work provides insight into the history of early European contact with Australia.
With the bookplate of John Woolley, Australian academic and clergyman and first principal of the University of Sydney to the front pastedown, and the bookplate of Kenn Back to the verso of the front free endpaper.
Kenn Back was a British meteorologist with the British Antarctic survey, and spent eight winters in the Antarctic. In addition, he served as base commander at Halley, Faraday and Rothera stations. His library collection was built over decades and highlights his love of exploration.
