The first edition, first impression of this work, rebound in a half calf binding, with gilt spine lettering. Top edge gilt. Binder's stamp of Maltby's of Oxford to the front paste down.

The British civil servant Sir John Colville (1915-1987) was best known for these diaries, which provide an insight into the world of 10 Downing Street while Winston Churchill was Prime Minister.

Written between 1939 and 1955, these diaries record conversations between Churchill and his colleagues, the differences between Churchill and Chamberlain (as Colville served both Prime Ministers), as well as Colville's private opinions about the political scene at that time.

Four individual pages of Sir John Colville's diaries are reproduced as end papers.

Condition

Rebound in a half calf binding. Externally very smart. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean. Small marks to the fore edge, not affecting the pages.
