'Pride and Prejudice' is a novel of manners, following Elizabeth Bennett as she learns about the difference between true good and superficial good; its themes include marriage, education and wealth. Written by Jane Austen, it was first published in 1813 by T. Egerton. It remains one of the most popular and adored books among both critics and the public, having sold over twenty million copies and inspired countless adaptations across stage and screen and unofficial sequels. Jane Austen (1775-1817) was most renowned for her novels, which act as commentaries upon the landed gentry of Britain at the turn of the century; her other important works include 'Persuasion', 'Sense and Sensibility', 'Emma' and 'Mansfield Park'.
