The first thus editions of these two works in the publisher's original pictorial paper wraps.

James Henry Lees-Milne (1908-1997) was an architectural historian, novelist and biographer, who worked for the National Trust from 1936 to 1973. His witty and candid diaries span from 1942 to 1997.

This set comprises of his second and third published diaries, Prophesying Peace, covering the wartime years 1944 to 1945, and Caves of Ice, covering the years immediately post-war, 1946 to 1947. During this time, Lees-Milne inspected country houses which were offered to the National Trust, but also mingled in fashionable literary circles, meeting the likes of Nancy Mitford, Ivy Compton-Burnett and the Pope Hennessys.

Condition

In the publisher's original pictorial paper wraps. Externally, very smart and bright. Light creasing to the bottom corner to the rear of the wrap to 'Prophesying Peace' and to top corner to the front of the wrap to 'Caves of Ice'. Internally, firmly bound. Marginal age toning to pages which are otherwise bright and clean.
