First Edition, Publishers' Original Binding, With Dustwrapper
This work is the first novel in the first of three trilogies centering on Deighton's middle-aged (and somewhat jaded) intelligence officer Bernard Samson, working for the British Secret Intelligence Service. Set in the early 1890s, this novel begins with the former field agent Sampson behind his desk in London, a position he has been in for the past five years. However, he is quickly tasked with the dangerous and crucial rescue of a highly placed agent in East Germany codenamed "Brahms Four" who is urgently demanding safe passage to the West. With knowledge that "Brahms Four" had saved his life nearly twenty years before, Sampson must put everything on the line, and navigate past traitors and a false trail of suspicion that could blow the whole operation. Complete with original price-clipped dustwrapper, designed by the English graphic designer and author Raymond Hawkey who worked on a number of Deighton's books, including 'Horse Under Water', 'Funeral in Berlin' and 'The Action Cookbook'.
