First edition, uncommon, in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Illustrations include a colour frontispiece and over one-hundred black-and-white illustrations of the artist's work to the rear of text. Part of the 'Oxford Studies in the History of Art and Architecture'. This work is intended as a critical biography of the painter William Dyce , a Scottish painter who played an enormous role in the formation of public art education in the United Kingdom. Additionally, he was part of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, and was inspired by their ethos as well as their aesthetic ideals. With a preface from art historian Quentin Bell (1910-1996), nephew of Virginia Woolf. Marcia Pointon is an art historian who has spent time as Art History professor throughout Northern England. She currently works as a free-lance consultant and research. Prior owner's ink inscription to front endpaper. Collated, complete.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding, in the unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, excellent, with no noticeable faults other than a bit of bumping to extremities and head and tail of spine. Dust wrapper is excellent with minimal age-toning to top edge of wraps, as well as fly leaves and reverse. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean throughout. Prior owner's ink inscription to front endpaper.
