This is a wonderful collection of short stories by Ambrose Bierce, published under the title 'Tales of Soldiers and Civilians' as well as 'In the Midst of Life'. Initially published in early 1892, these stories describe incidents in the lives of soldiers and civilians during the American Civil War. This work was one of the most influential American books which was written before 1900.

This work is divided into two sections, those being 'Soldiers' and 'Civilians', with stories such as 'A Horseman in the Sky', 'A Son of the Gods', 'The Story of a Conscience', and 'The Eyes of the Panther'.

Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce (1842-1914) was an American short story writer, journalist, and Civil War veteran. One of his books, 'The Devil's Dictionary' is well-regarded, leading Bierce to be regarded as a pioneering writer of realist and horror fiction.
