'The Monkey King' was Mo's debut novel and won the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize in 1979. Then novel follows the humorous exploits of protagonist Wallace Nolasco, who is denied his dowry in post-war Hong Kong. The novel is a family saga, driven by the tensions between Wallace and his patriarchal father-in-law Mr Poon.
