Inscribed to the front free endpaper by Henry Thynne, 6th Marquess of Bath, who authored the forward of this work: 'To John Collins with grateful thanks for all his expertise, knowledge & advice, from Bath, 1978.

The first edition, first impression, in the publisher's original unclipped dust wrapper.

Illustrated with twelve double-sided plates, and numerous vignette illustrations. Collated, complete.

A history of the impressive English country house.

Loosely inserted is a typed letter from Jane Fowles to John Collins of Maggs Bros. regarding a payment, on the letterhead of Longleat House. The letter is dated 1984.

With a wealth of loosely inserted ephemera. This includes: a February 1992 interview with Alexander Thynn, 7th Marquess of Bath from the Sunday Times; Thynn's 2020 Guardian obituary; a 2010 Guardian interview with Thynn; the 1992 obituary of Henry Thynne from the Indipendant; an admissions brochure for the house; an article of the discovery of a painting of the Longleat gardens; a newspaper image of two members of the family; an 1983 Sunday Times Magazine article on a family feud, and finally a photograph of the 6th Marquess and three of his sons.

Condition

In the publisher's original cloth binding, with unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, excellent, with shelf wear to spine tail. Inscription to front free endpaper, and extensive notations to rear free endpaper and pastedown. Light spotting to dust wrapper flyleaves, with dust wrapper otherwise excellent. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
