A striking work looking into the beautiful and popular paintings of the Tang, Song, Yuan, and Ming Dynasties.

These two volumes cover a vast period of Chinese history, an interesting point of view looking at the development of the country through its art from the year 619 with the Tang Dynasty, up to the end of the Ming Dynasty in 1644, thus covering a millenium of the country's history.

The Tang dynasty is known as the golden age of Chinese civilization, with its advancements in artistic technique and style being incredibly influential across East and Central Asia. Into the Song Dynasty painting reached a new level of sophistication with landscape painting, with many depicting mountains and rivers. The Yuan Dynasty saw painters turn more to expressing soul and spirits in their art, with scholar artists leading a movement of expression emotion, thought, and personality through their art. Finally, the Ming Dynasty saw a great development in the use of colour in painting, with art emulating the earlier realistic representation shown in the Song dynasty.

The one-hundred and twenty-one paintings portrayed in these volumes show the beauty and splendour of the Chinese landscapes, wildlife, and people, as well as showing the maturity and colourful nature of their artistic techniques.
