A scarce work, this being a new edition of 1975, the first edition being published in 1908.
An impressive work by Charles MacGregor, exploring in great detail the Second Anglo-Afghan War. This was a military conflict fought between 1878 and 1880. MacGregor served under Frederick Roberts in this war, and serves as Quartermaster General on the Khyber communication lines.
This work was re-edited by Francis Gordon Cardew and compiled by Samuel Pasfield Oliver, this 1975 edition reproduced with minor editorial changes by Historical Section, Army Education Directorate, GHQ, Rawalpindi.
Illustrated with a frontispiece, six folding plates, seven folding maps, twenty-five plates, and two maps.
Collated, lacking the plates and maps facing pages 30, 60, 64, 80, 242, 274, 278, 288, 336, 398, 416, 448, 544, and 582.
Condition
In the original publisher's cloth binding. Externally, generally smart, with light marks to the boards and spine. Ink to the tail of the spine. Light bumping to the extremities. Small chip to the front joint. Stamp to the verso of the rear endpaper. Label to the front paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and clean. Stamps to the reverse of the plates and maps. Folding maps are a little edge worn with small closed tears. Plate facing page 114 is detached but present, plate facing page 104 is working loose. Pages 583 to 586 are torn in half, lacking the bottom half. Lacking the plates and maps facing pages 30, 60, 64, 80, 242, 274, 278, 288, 336, 398, 416, 448, 544, and 582.
