Scholar of comparative studies of Indo-European society George Dumezil, articulates his theory that ancient and prehistoric Indo-European culture and literature revolved around three major functions: sovereignty, force and fertility.

Georges Dumézil was a French comparative philologist best known for his analysis of sovereignty and power in Proto-Indo-European religion and society. He is considered one of the major contributors to mythography.
