Georges Dumézil was a French comparative philologist best known for his analysis of sovereignty and power in Proto-Indo-European religion and society. He is considered one of the major contributors to mythography.

In this work, he considers how the early mythology of a people can be creatively transposed into the "history" of their kings, or the source of their fiction.

He uses the example of Saga of Hadingus, written by a twelfth-century Danish "historian".
