The novel is set in the fictional archipelago Earthsea, and follows the young mage Ged, who was born in a village on the island of Gont. He shows great magical powers, and joins the school of wizardry, where he comes into conflict with a fellow student. Their conflict leads to a magical duel, which goes awry and ends up releasing a shadow creature that attacks Ged. The novel then continues with Ged seeking to find a way to be free of the creature.
This work is considered to be widely influential on the fantasy genre, with Margaret Atwood and the director Hayao Miyazaki being influenced by the novel.
