This book is regarded as one of the finest works of early Western scholarship on Persia and the Near East. The original 1711 edition is considered to be the standard, as the English translation for this work only covers less than half of the original material. 

Sir John Cardin was a jeweller and traveller from France, who received praise by various thinkers such as Montesquieu, Rousseau and Voltaire.
